GREENVILLE, Wis. (AP) - A 10-year-old Outagamie County girl came really close to unknowingly putting in her mouth a black widow spider that was hiding in red grapes.
Leah Rysdam, of Greenville, picked up a grape Tuesday and had it halfway to her mouth before she saw the spider. She says she screamed and dropped the grape.
Her mother, Tammie Rysdam, thought it looked like a black widow so they called the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley. But by the time they got the spider there, it had died.
Biology professor Terri Gonya says this black widow would not have killed anyone, but would likely require a hospital visit. She says it likely came with the grapes from Mexico but the store where they bought them did check for other spiders.
