BRIGGSVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Dan Deming had heard the rumors that there was treasure buried somewhere on his central Wisconsin farmland but he was never sure how much to believe them.
He's a believer now.
The 34-year-old electrician was tearing down a 100-year-old shed on his farm last month. That's when he found a rusted box containing wads of currency dating back to the Depression.
He says the bills were too degraded for him to count the amount, but scraps of paper with the bills suggested the total was $1,700.
Deming says collectors wouldn't want bills in such bad condition so he sent them to the U.S. Treasury, which redeems mutilated bills for face value.
He says his grandfather once told him a previous farm owner stashed money on the property. Deming spent some time looking for it but says he assumed it'd be buried, not in the stone wall of the shed.
The farm is near Briggsville in Adams County.
